Deep Purple dibentuk pada 1968  di Hertfordshire, Inggris oleh Ritchie Blackmore (gitar), Jon Lord (organ Hammond), Rod Evans (vokal), Nick Simper (bass) dan Ian Paice (drum).

Band legendaris yang memiliki banyak penggemar di seluruh dunia ini dianggap sebagai salah satu pelopor musik heavy metal musik heavy metal, selain Led Zeppelin dan Black Sabbat.

Nama Deep Purple diambil dari judul lagu kesukaan nenek dari John Lord.
